Blackhurst earns Lighthouse Distinction
The City of St. Charles School District is proud to announce that Blackhurst Elementary has been recognized as a “2019 Leader in Me Lighthouse School of Academic Distinction.” The school was notified of this achievement earlier last month and made the announcement to the students and staff on April 19. Leader in Me is an educational leadership program from FranklinCovey that empowers all students to become leaders and learn important life skills.
“This is a really exciting time for our school,” said Stephen Wilson, Blackhurst Elementary. “It shows the extraordinary impact the school is having on staff, students, parents and the community. Lighthouse schools serve as a model for leadership and mentors to other schools.”
This is the fourth year that Blackhurst Elementary has been considered a Leader in Me school.
According to FranklinCovey, this distinction is awarded to Leader in Me schools “that have both met the rigorous requirements necessary to achieve and maintain Light School Certification and have shown exemplary academic growth.”
To meet these standards, a school must rank in at least the 85th percentile their state’s standardized tests as well as rank in at least the 50th percentile, and have 5 percent growth, of academic growth from the previous years ranking. This distinction shows that not only is the school high achieving, but they are showing marked improvement as well.
“We would like to keep progressing forward and making sure we are sustaining in all areas of the Lighthouse rubric,” Wilson said. “Our goal is to continue growing our students and staff with their leadership skills.”
